Magnetic fields from binary white dwarfs to galaxies

Abstract

Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the Universe. They play a role on essentially all astrophysical scales from stars and planets to galaxy and galaxy clusters.

Nevertheless, including them in simulations of astrophysical objects is still a technical and numerical challenge.

I will introduce the current MHD implementation in the moving-mesh code Arepo and present preliminary results of an ongoing code comparison project between astrophysical MHD codes with differnet approaches to MHD.

I will then showcase results of two recent astrophysical MHD simulations with Arepo: the merger of two white dwarfs and the evolution of magnetic fields in cosmological simulations of disc galaxies.
