Magnetic fields from binary white dwarfs to galaxies
Abstract
Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the Universe. They play a role on virtually all astrophysical scales, from stars and planets to galaxies and galaxy clusters.
Nevertheless, incorporating them into simulations of astrophysical objects remains a technical and numerical challenge.
I will introduce the current MHD implementation in the moving-mesh code Arepo and present preliminary results from an ongoing code comparison project involving astrophysical MHD codes that use different approaches to MHD.
I will then present results from two recent astrophysical MHD simulations using Arepo: the merger of two white dwarfs and the evolution of magnetic fields in cosmological simulations of disk galaxies.
