Galaxy morphology: how the growth of their bulges shapes the evolution of galaxies

Abstract

Almost a century after the publication of the Hubble sequence, which classifies galaxies based on their morphology, we still do not fully understand how galaxies acquire and transform their shapes over cosmic time. In this talk, I will focus on the role of bulges in shaping galaxy morphology. Using a combination of observations and simulations, I will show how the growth of bulges is connected to the cessation of star formation and the overall evolution of galaxies.
